Ventolin^3, deano and the DVTT(tm)

Ventolin, deano and the DVTT(tm)

Vento (formerly ventolin^3, now suspected to have re-branded himself as calculo after mod censorship) is a well-known personality on LR.  He enjoys performing what-if pseudostatistical analysis on world class track performances with the goal of computing a theoretical "equivalent" time that could be realized under perfect conditions. Because T&F performances are affected by many environmental and human factors, which are very rarely all perfectly aligned, this speculation provides an endless source of debate and amusement for T&F fans.

Vento's favorite adjustments take into account: lane position; track condition; windspeeds; temperature; humidity; the athlete's previous racing; biorhythms if known, and a host of other factors.

For example, here is a recent vento contribution showing adjustment based on: "slow, unenforced laps where you are flushing time down the drain, even after you flatten out the splits ( that's good for races with little variation ) - same principle as a 3'50 guy who ambles to bell in 3'10 isn't going to run close to 40s for last lap - slow, unenforced laps throw away lot of time, 1/2 woud be a good number to start with."

Any discussion of vento inevitably brings us to the subject of JIM RYUN.  Ryun is well known as one of the USA's greatest athletes, world record holder for 880y, 1500m and one mile in the 1960s, and Olympic silver medalist in the 1968 1500meters.

On LR, the ultimate track performances are eternally debated but vento has asserted for many years that Ryun is the GOAT.  Vento asserts Ryun's equivalent best times are ~44.0 (that is, 44.00 for the 400meters), ~1.39 (1:39.0 for the 800meters, which you will see is 1.91 seconds faster than David Rudisha's current WR), ~3.24 (3:24.0 for the 1500meters, which is 2.00 seconds faster than Hicham El Guerrouj's current WR) and ~3.41 for the mile (which is 2.13 seconds faster than El Guerrouj's current WR).  He reaches these conclusions after performing an in-depth analysis of each performance, the like of which is amazing to behold.  TiberiuSS calls these analyses "Deano-Ventolin True Times (tm)" or DVTT(tm), a term derived by concatenating ventolin's ID with that of deano - deano is another LR stalwart who is world-renowned as a Coe-fanboy-maniac and who enjoys performing his own pseudostatistical adjustments specifically on Coe's running performances.

These adjusted times or DVTT(tm) have become legendary on LR.  Vento's analysis accounts for the occasional cryptic reference to times of "~1.39," "~3.24" or "~3.41" in the threads when discussing ultimate performances.

Now, in addition to the actual insanity of these "conversions," vento displays a unique mode of argumentation in which he denounces with impatience and an unusual vocabulary those too dumb to follow his carefully-spelled out arguments.  Check it out.  His influence is undeniable.  For example, he is responsible for the popularization of the misspelled epithet "MORAN" (instead of the conventional "moron") on LR.  Take a look at how this gets used: just a few moments ago, Loki posted in criticism of Flagpole: "I always felt that you were a complete moran. I must say that validation feels great."  This is the classic LR-style dialog that we know and love, all thanks to ^vento!

Although I find vento's contributions amusing and fun, in fact sometimes they even provide pure comic relief, and I don't mind his mode, the censors object to his postings and often censor his work.  This is too bad because he is one of the best-known contributors who gives the board its character.  I hope to bring vento's contributions to the world of T&F discussion into more light.  But this problem of counterproductive censorship does not only affect him.  There are others - like jamin, stuckwithmatch, and domitian/TiberiuSS - and we will get to them later...

4/9/20.  Most amusing!  Here on LR we have a curious dude who isn't yet aware of any of this.

"Hey SpaRtaQQvLUs,....
I gotta say, you lost me with the following
"But he wasn't the greatest. Oh no. The greatest one ran ~1.39, ~3.24 and ~3.41. You know. If you don't, then you have no business posting on LR. "

Who is that 'greatest one?' I mean, no one runner, certainly no American runner, let alone world-record holder from any country, has run those kind of times . . . all of them under the existing world records I presume you intend them to correspond to."

Well, those are not my data.  They're vento's!  Gotta love it when LR readers ask about this.

8/19/18.  By popular request: people have been asking me for examples of vento's art on LR, so OK, here are some of his truly epic contributions...there are plenty more if you look for them...
